Peace and timeless beauty on a
sun-drenched hillside
Delightful one-bedroom apartment on the first floor of a 13th-century watchtower, in a quiet hamlet on the Western Valdera. Just 25 minutes from Pisa, it is set among olive groves and offers soothing views of the rolling Tuscan landscape beyond. Beautifully restored, with exposed beams and original terracotta floors and ceilings, it’s furnished in a tasteful mix of contemporary classics and antiques.

Borghettino di Ripoli, a farmhouse and watchtower dating back to the Middle Ages, has been converted into apartments by a team of well known architects from Pisa, using period materials and traditional methods. All have use of a pretty, shared garden and a stunning, 10-metre infinity pool.

You could spend all day comatose by the pool, sipping Pinot Grigio and gazing out at the hills. It would, however, be a shame. In a few minutes, you can be in Cevoli, the medieval village you can see from the garden, or Lari, famous for its castle, or Casciana Terme, famous for its thermal spa. Within an hour you can be in Florence, Lucca, Volterra or Siena – or playing golf on one of the best golf courses in Italy, or swimming in the sea
This is a Tuscany that’s amazingly unspoilt – and amazingly accessible. Both Pisa and Florence are a short hop from many European airports. From London to Pisa (which has cheap flights from Ryanair, BA and easyJet) takes less than two hours. Within an hour of collecting your luggage you can be in that pool.
